History

Back to Our Roots

Our story began in 1921 when two newsmen, Leo Bozell and Morris Jacobs, decided to create news rather than report it. Their first assignment was to protect a private energy company from the threat of public power.

Leo and Morris worked relentlessly to build their business. And by 1960, B&J had become an international agency with a list of clients that rivaled all competitors.

Through the '80s and '90s, we were part of several acquisitions and buybacks. In 1986, we were acquired by Lorimar Telepictures, and a short three years later, we purchased ourselves back. In 1997, we were acquired by True North. And in 2001, True North was acquired by InterPublic, the world's largest agency holding company.

It was time to get back to the ad business rather than the stock market game. Through a buyback in 2001, we once again became an independent, client-focused, employee-owned agency.
